Chapter 47: I Wanted to Restrain Myself
Fights broke out at the site every few days. At night, it was fine; Wu Da let them fight as they pleased, as long as they didn’t steal materials.
But it wouldn’t do during the day; they had to work, and fighting affected efficiency.
The fight was between the original workers and the new ones, and they had even come to blows.
A dozen people were brawling. Zhou Yuejun tried to stop them and even took a few punches and kicks.
After finally stopping them, Zhou Yuejun took charge and fired a troublemaker who had just arrived. “You don’t need to come anymore.”
“Based on what? Who started the fight firstâdid you fucking lose your eyes?”
The troublemaker was defiant and refused to be managed, looking like he would pick up a piece of scrap steel to hit someone if he didn’t like them.
Zhou Yuejun naturally knew who started the fightâit was someone who had worked for Wu Da for a long time, whom everyone usually called Old Wu.
Old Wu was honest and dullâthe type who was easily bullied.
Before, there weren’t so many people at the site. Knowing he had followed Wu Da for a long time, those people would only take small advantages of him, not openly oppress or crowd him out.
But among the new batch, many had bad tempers. Today they wanted Old Wu to treat them to a meal; tomorrow they wanted to drink, and they even wanted Old Wu to buy Zhonghua cigarettes.
Old Wu had three children and three elderly parents; the pressure was high. If Wu Da had a site, he worked; if not, he did odd jobs, basically working year-round without rest.
Even though Old Wu was timid, he had a family to support. After he didn’t buy cigarettes for those people, they started swearing and saying many nasty things.
They said Old Wuâs wife was cheating in the village, that those three children weren’t his, using foul language that even involved the kids.
Only then did Old Wu start fighting.
Zhou Yuejunâs cold expression was fierce and sinister, showing no fear. “I saw it. You can get out now.”
A vicious, sinister look flashed in the troublemakerâs eyes. “Fine, you’re being biased and protective, right? What right do you have to fire me? If you have the guts, go talk it over with Boss Wu.”
Zhou Yuejun knew that Wu Da used him for peace and quiet. He had to be the one to stand out and “kill the chicken to warn the monkey.”
He wasn’t afraid of being hated.
“If you insist on staying, keep working, but I won’t pay your wages at the end of the month.”
Without wages, who the fuck would want to work here?
Before leaving, the troublemakerâs gaze was poisonous and harsh, clearly holding a grudge against Zhou Yuejun.
Zhou Yuejun wasn’t afraid; in truth, he was even more terrifying than that troublemaker.
His cold phoenix eyes were narrow and suppressed, like a venomous snakeâdark and murderous. Once he targeted someone, it would make their skin crawl.
If that troublemaker was a gangster from a movie, Zhou Yuejun was more like a murderous demon with a thick scent of blood.
“Whoever wants to leave with him, leave. Whoever wants to work, work properly.”
“Boss Wuâs next site is on the coast. If you want to go with him, don’t cause any trouble.”
Almost everyone at the site knew that Wu Da was going to the coast.
The consumption level on the coast was high, so the wages would surely be high too.
This job included food and housing; as long as one didn’t have those bad habits, they could surely save more money.
Who didn’t want to earn money?
Even the few lackeys who weren’t fired by Zhou Yuejun were moved.
Zhou Yuejun had just arrived home when Yu Deng brought over the canned fruit from the fridge.
“Itâs ready to eat!”
Even though Yu Deng was lazy and loved ease, he wasn’t someone who ate alone; he would always leave some for Zhou Yuejun.
Even if he was sometimes really craving it and didn’t leave much, it was still a gesture.
The can was pear-shaped and quite large. Yu Deng held it with both hands and placed it on the table. His dark eyesâshimmering and moistâstared at Zhou Yuejun with liveliness.
His hands touched the cold glass wall, leaving large damp patches. His hands were chilled to a pink hue, so he rubbed them against his clothes.
“What happened to your cheekbone? And here too.”
Yu Dengâs rounded fingertip rubbed Zhou Yuejunâs cheekbone, but his attention fell on the right side of his jaw.
Both areas were bruised purple.
Yu Deng knit his fine brows, his tone anxious and indignant. “You were hit again?!”
“No. Others were fighting, and I went to break it up. I just got bumped.”
Zhou Yuejun used chopsticks to pick up a piece of peach meat and fed it to Yu Deng.
When Yu Deng ate it, the coldness and refreshing taste exploded in his mouth. It almost filled his mouth, but he still pouted, his speech coming out in mumbles.
“Just keep lying to me.”
“How can you get hit even at the construction site? Did you hit back?”
As expected of the protagonist, a life full of misfortune.
Zhou Yuejun gave Yu Deng a general account of what happened today.
“Don’t go out for these few days. If someone knocks, don’t open the door. If something happens, shout down to the street and have the shop lady call me.”
In the face of life-threatening danger, Yu Deng still valued his life. He nodded and blinked.
“I know. Then I won’t go out for now, but I have to go to Qiao Fangyuâs house the day after tomorrow.”
The birthday banquet would surely be grand, and there would be lots of food.
Zhou Yuejun remembered; he wouldn’t forget. “Iâve swapped my shift. Iâll pick you up and drop you off then.”
“I’ll go get the medicine to rub on you.”
After speaking, he ran off, deba-deba.
Because he was wearing a pair of very short shorts that weren’t loose today, when he ran, those rounded, full cheeks trembledâthey were quite fleshy.
He should have gained a bit of weight.
“Weâre having eel noodle soup tonight.”
Zhou Yuejun had seen someone selling eels at the market this morning.
There were many eels this seasonâfat and delicious, and the price wasn’t expensive. Used for spicy oil noodles, the taste was very fresh.
Yu Deng slurped a mouthful of noodles, eating until his mouth was stained with oil. He then picked up a piece of eel meat and stuffed it inâone could see how good his appetite was.
Seeing that Yu Deng loved it, Zhou Yuejun picked the meat from his own bowl into Yu Dengâs.
Because he was thinking about the weight Yu Deng had gained, after washing the dishes, Zhou Yuejun quickly rinsed his body and got into bed.
He was impatient and hasty, as if he hadn’t eaten in ages.
Yu Dengâs slender waist wasn’t even a handfulâhe wasn’t like Zhou Yuejun at all.
Yu Deng was truly weakâlike a mayfly, or like duckweed, unable to resist even a shred of wind or wave.
After Zhou Yuejun cleaned Yu Deng with warm water and carried him onto the bed with one hand, Yu Deng was still sobbing.
Tears had soaked the pillowcase, and his thick, long eyelashes were wet in clumps. “Why are you so fierce~”
His soft, waxy crying voice was pitiful but also seductive. His flushed eye sockets spilled the tears that had already filled them, leaving marks on his flawless jade-like face.
Yu Deng bit his lip, but his lips were already swollen and out of shape. No one knew who the culprit was.
“You told me to beg you, so I begged. I even called you ‘Hubby,’ but what about what you promised me? Was it eaten by a dog?”
“You’re so bad~”
Zhou Yuejun stroked Yu Dengâs soft hair. He had recently discovered that Yu Deng really liked having his hair touchedâhe was completely like a small cat.
“I wanted to restrain myself.”
