Chapter 23: Western Battlefield
Who would dare touch him? Did they really think the Xiongchong Protection Association just ate rice for nothing?
Even if the Xiongchong Protection Association was useless, would the Insect Emperor allow them to touch a Xiongchong as they pleased?
Did he really think he was that easy to fool?
Although his rank wasn’t as high as Jiang Xu’s, it was still considered top-tier in the Zerg race, alright?
Whoever dared to target a Xiongchong was simply courting death!
“…” Why is his reaction so fast today? A glint of calculation flashed through Zoe’s eyes as he continued his intimidation, “The Jiang family can get rid of you without anyone knowing. Are you sure your status as a Xiongchong will be of any use?”
Jiang Xu saw through Zoe’s intentions and played along, “It’s useless.”
Pausing for a moment, he added, “If my Cizu wants to mess with you, you’ll end up in some random ditch tomorrow without even knowing how you got there.”
“…” Bernd felt a chill run down his spine. He had wanted to ask if it was true, but suddenly recalled a scene he had accidentally witnessed the first time he came to the Jiang house looking for Jiang Xu.
Feeling a bit panicked inwardly, he looked at Lan. “You, you go hang out with that Major General Fei. I’m going to chat with Zoe and the others for a while.”
Lan glanced at the Xiongchong who was forcibly keeping up a brave front and slightly lowered his eyes. “Yes, Xiongzhu.”
After speaking, Lan turned to bow to Jiang Xu and Zoe, then asked Jiang Xu, “Lord Jiang Xu, may I go chat with Fei?”
Jiang Xu took a step to the side, making way for the bug behind him. “Go ahead.”
“Yes, Xiongzhu.”
After replying, Fei looked at Lan and noticed the other giving him a meaningful look. His first reaction was that Lan had something urgent to discuss, so he followed without hesitation.
Seeing the silhouettes of Fei and Lan completely disappear, Bernd immediately lost all his previous bravado.
His arrogance had dwindled down to a barely visible spark as he looked at Jiang Xu pleadingly, “Will your Cizu really deal with me?”
Seeing him tucking his tail between his legs and begging for help, an idea crept into Jiang Xu’s mind. “Do you think I’m lying to you? To tell you the truth, when we came back this morning, my Cizu directly told that Cichong that if I ever bullied him, he could complain to my Cizu at any time.”
The implication of these words was obvious. If even his own grandson didn’t dare offend that bug, wouldn’t he—a completely unrelated outsider—suffer an even worse fate?
That last tiny spark of Bernd’s bravado completely vanished. “Um, about our bet… let’s just, let’s just drop it.”
He thought about the bet he had made with Jiang Xu. At the time, he had been half-heartedly pushing for it, thinking that since the other didn’t want the bug and he happened to want him, he would just fool the other into making a wager.
Looking at it now, he had tried to steal a chicken only to end up losing his rice; he had purely brought suffering upon himself.
Thinking about what would happen if the bet was exposed to Zolan, then…
He shook his freezing arms. His little life was more important. “Let’s just pretend it never happened. Whatever you do, don’t let your Cizu know.”
“…” Jiang Xu was very satisfied with his cooperation. Just to completely cut off the other’s retreat, he continued to ask, “Are you sure it’s off?”
“Sure, I’m sure.” Bernd valued his life. If he was truly offed, that would be the end. He was still so young; it wasn’t worth it for a mere Cichong.
“Alright, remember what you said.” Good, problem solved.
This bug was too easy to scare. With just a little bluff, the matter was perfectly resolved. Jiang Xu was very satisfied.
He hadn’t expected such a pleasant surprise tonight.
“Thanks then.” Bernd quietly touched his neck; his little life was saved.
He couldn’t help but recall that pool full of bloody water, and a chill ran through his entire body.
Naturally, his movements didn’t escape the eyes of Jiang Xu and Zoe. The two Xiongchong who had successfully pulled off their scheme exchanged a glance, neither missing the amusement in the other’s eyes.
“Next time you see Major General Fei, use a better tone,” Zoe lowered his voice to quietly remind Bernd, as if afraid other bugs might hear. “He has a death-exemption gold medal right now. No one can touch him. Even Jiang Xu is having a hard time protecting himself in the Jiang family right now. If you make him unhappy, none of us can save you.”
“Tsk. Cichong really are…” Bernd didn’t finish his sentence. Catching the warning glares shot at him by Jiang Xu and Zoe, he swallowed the rest of his words. “Got it.”
Jiang Xu realized that this Xiongchong actually wasn’t entirely hopeless; after all, he cherished his life.
Just a light scare and he was terrified out of his wits, agreeing to whatever was said.
Perhaps with a few more scares, he could even be guided back onto the right path.
Fei led Lan out of the banquet hall and directly found a hidden corner outside the villa.
The dim yellow streetlights shone on a large tree nearby, its shadow perfectly covering the bench they were sitting on. Unless one looked closely, they wouldn’t be noticed at all.
“Admiral Lan, did you need me for something?”
After confirming there were no bugs around, Lan looked at Fei with a heavy expression. “This afternoon, the military district received a confidential report from the Western Battlefield.”
“? Western Battlefield?” Fei looked at the other’s serious expression, feeling a bit puzzled. “What happened at the Western Battlefield?”
Although this campaign was arduous, they had calculated the outcome before the battle even began.
They were 100% guaranteed to win.
Whether it was their armor or weapons, or the combat power of the Junci who went to the battlefield—every single aspect was far superior to the enemy.
He couldn’t foresee what could possibly happen at the Western Battlefield. Could it be… “Did the enemy surrender?”
“In this campaign, our entire army was wiped out. Not a single one survived.” Lan’s voice was very soft, but the weight it carried was extremely heavy.
Fei felt as if a thunderbolt had struck right next to his ear. He looked at Lan in disbelief. “What… what did you say?”
Impossible!
Absolutely impossible!
“I also hope it’s fake.” Lan thought of that army on the battlefield—an army that had mobilized almost all the top-tier combat power of the First Military District.
He hoped more than Fei did that this news was fake.
“There is absolutely something wrong. There’s a traitor in the army.” Fei didn’t believe they would lose.
Thinking of those familiar silhouettes, Fei’s eyes instantly turned red.
He remembered the colleagues who had been sharing stories about their little bug cubs with him just a short while ago.
Many of them were his comrades-in-arms from the same period.
“Right, what about Wenxi? I remember Wenxi wasn’t on the roster. Why hasn’t he been at the military district lately? Did he take leave?” Fei suddenly realized something, sensing an ominous feeling, and looked to Lan for reassurance.
Lan remained silent, just looking at Fei without speaking for a long time.
“I’ll give him a call.” As if seeking proof, Fei began flipping through the contacts in his communicator.
Just as he was about to press dial, a hand covered his communicator.
Fei didn’t understand and looked in confusion at the Cichong opposite him.
“There’s no need to call. He was on the roster this time.”
Lan’s voice was very deep, landing heavily on Fei’s heart.
“Impossible. I saw the roster, and his name wasn’t on it.” Fei felt a sharp pain in his head. He covered his head with one hand, directly retorting, not wanting to hear the other’s joke.
“After your hasty marriage, your name was struck from the roster. Since a spot opened up, we added Wenxi’s name to fill it. He took your place.”
This thunderbolt struck Fei so hard his vision went dark. “How could this be? How could this happen? Why? Why did it turn out like this!!!”
A smiling figure flashed through Fei’s mind.
The other’s eyes would curve into thin crescents when he smiled: Ah Fei, after we both retire, let’s live together and keep each other company. We can find a planet with beautiful scenery and spend our twilight years there. How about it?
