Chapter 66: Shen Yuan’s Brain is Severely Damaged
“Increase the voltage.”
Yu Xiuqing ordered in a deep voice.
After speaking, he turned around coldly. His eyes fell upon the dense dark clouds outside the window, gazing into the wind and rain, refusing to look back at the agonizing youth behind him.
“Yes.”
The doctor pressed the control key, starting to increase the current. It soared from the initial 100V to 200V.
Under the intense stimulation of the electrical current, the person on the bed writhed in agony, emitting shrill, miserable screams.
Blue veins bulged on his snow-white arms as a thin layer of sweat continually broke out, the bedsheets twisted out of shape by his desperate grip.
Hearing these heart-wrenching roars, the man’s face only grew more ruthless. His eyes were deep and pitch-black, like an ancient well, making it incredibly difficult to discern the slightest trace of emotion.
“Yu Xiansheng, the patient’s body has reached its limit. If we increase it any further, I’m afraid it will…”
Before the doctor could finish his sentence, he was cut off by Yu Xiuqing: “It’s fine, continue.”
After icily spitting out those words, he once again turned his gaze toward the torrential rain outside the window.
A blinding flash of lightning suddenly tore through the sky, illuminating the indifference in his eyes, along with a barely perceptible hesitation.
Helpless, the doctor could only comply.
The voltage climbed once more, reaching 300V.
Shen Yuan instantly convulsed violently.
Whether it was due to an extraordinarily resolute consciousness, he somehow managed to withstand this level of voltage without dying within two seconds of the current making contact with his brain.
Even the doctor found it unbelievable, hurriedly recording this astonishing figure into his medical career notes.
Watching his superior’s blatant disregard for Shen Yuan’s life, Qi Yunzhao’s fingers curled at his sides. Ultimately, he still lacked the courage to voice any objection, helplessly looking away.
With the agonizing wails ringing in his ears, all he could do now was silently pray that this fool wouldn’t be electrocuted into a charred corpse.
As time ticked by, Shen Yuan’s screams gradually diminished until they stopped completely. The two small hands that had been gripping the bedsheets in a death grip lost all their color.
His head slumped weakly to the side, and countless phantom images instantly materialized before his eyes, overlapping layer upon layer.
The little fool seemed to see the first time he ever met Yu Xiansheng. Through a gilded cage, his pitiful, trembling eyes looked at that devastatingly handsome man.
The man had unlocked the iron chains that had bound him for so many years, gazing at him with the most gentlemanly, gentle look. He then took his hand, uttering words about taking him home…
He simply drowned in that incredibly pleasant scent on the man, gradually becoming unable to extricate himself.
The once easily attainable happiness and beauty were, it turned out, nothing but illusions. Only the pain and torture were real.
Memories began to flash by like a revolving lantern.
The bits and pieces of his interactions with Xiansheng over the past two years shattered entirely, like a flawless mirror.
Tears spilling from the corners of his eyes silently slid past his temples, soaking the clean pillow. Shen Yuan’s breathing was faint; at this moment, his entire being was in a state where his soul seemed to have left his body.
His pale lips struggled to twitch twice, shaping the word: “Xiansheng…”
How could the little fool have ever endured such agony? By the third tremble of his lips, he plunged into a dead faint.
Watching the sudden flatline on the electrocardiogram monitor, the doctor hurriedly halted the experiment. Although the number of patients he had treated with electrotherapy was countless, his voice still could not hide his panic:
“Not good, the patient is in shock!”
Hearing this, Yu Xiuqing turned around instantly. Frantic and panicked, he crossed the distance to the youth’s bed in two strides.
He first glanced at Shen Yuan, who showed no vital signs, and then grabbed the doctor by the collar, interrogating him fiercely: “What did you say? Shock?!”
“Yes…”
The doctor’s face flushed bright red. He swallowed hard in fear, but still tried his best to maintain his composure as he said:
“Because the current was too strong, the patient has now fallen into a deep coma. His breathing has stopped, he could die at any moment…”
Yu Xiuqing felt his heart sink heavily. His hand exerted force uncontrollably, yanking the doctor completely toward him. Glaring at him viciously, he enunciated through gritted teeth: “Tell me, he can still be saved, right?”
“This… currently, he can still be resuscitated…” The doctor’s voice trembled, his legs turning to jelly, absolutely not daring to meet those bloodthirsty eyes.
“Not can be, he must be kept alive! He cannot die, you must save his life!”
Yu Xiuqing’s eyes were bloodshot. Shoving the doctor away forcefully, he shouted sharply: “Get out and prepare for surgery!”
“Yes, yes…”
The doctor hastily agreed. He had nearly wet his pants in fear, immediately stumbling and scrambling out of the electrotherapy room.
Qi Yunzhao looked at the lifeless figure on the bed, urgency lacing his voice: “Sanye, what do we do now?”
“Summon all the top doctors in this hospital. If they cannot save him, this psychiatric hospital will cease to exist.” Yu Xiuqing’s cold face was frighteningly dark at this moment, his sclera streaked with multiple blood vessels.
Qi Yunzhao’s heart chilled. He said respectfully: “This subordinate will get it done immediately!” He then turned and walked out without delay.
Yu Xiuqing looked at the quietly lying figure, his heart tightening slightly. The blue veins on his hands stood out, his thin lips pressed into a tight line. The depths of his eyes were filled with restraint and worry.
In truth, he knew the severity of electroshock better than anyone else. Back then, his father was electrocuted to death by criminals using cables, and he himself had tasted the agony of electrocution.
Yet his unpredictable heart was in extreme contradiction. On one hand, he wanted Shen Yuan to suffer, to experience the consequences of betraying him; on the other hand, he couldn’t bear it…
He knew very well that deep down, perhaps he didn’t want Shen Yuan to suffer, yet he couldn’t suppress the inherent cruelty of his nature.
If Shen Yuan had just been obedient, instead of colluding with other men behind his back, he wouldn’t have used such extreme, torturous methods to force him into admitting his mistake!
It was all Shen Yuan bringing it upon himself, endlessly testing the limits of his patience.
This electrotherapy had better be able to stimulate those forgotten memories of how Shen Yuan evaded the bodyguards and entered the warehouse unharmed to destroy the goods, and then make him completely forget Yu Peishang!
…
By the time Shen Yuan was pushed into the operating room, he was already in cardiac arrest, just like a corpse. If the doctors had been one second slower with CPR, there probably wouldn’t have been a chance to resuscitate him.
This was a surgery that lasted two days and two nights.
All the authoritative doctors in the neurology department found it incredibly tricky for the first time. Risking their careers, they went all out to save the youth’s life.
Outside in the operating room corridor, Yu Xiuqing stood tall and straight at the door, his expression heavy.
Was he too cruel to Shen Yuan?
This question suddenly popped into his clogged mind, startling even himself.
The intertwined emotions of worry and anger made it hard for him to figure out for a moment if he actually cared about Shen Yuan. But if he cared, how could he be so ruthless?
Seeing him staring fixedly at the emergency room doors without speaking a word, frighteningly calm, Qi Yunzhao couldn’t help but advise:
“Sanye, why don’t you go rest for a bit? Waiting here without eating, drinking, or sleeping will ruin your health.”
The man remained silent, his brow showing slight fatigue. Only after a long period of silence did he slowly spit out a few words: “No, I want to see if he lives or dies.”
Qi Yunzhao lowered his head, saying nothing more.
He was already used to his superior’s behavior of inflicting harm and then showing inexplicable concern afterwards.
But using electroshock this time to punish Shen Yuan’s betrayal still left him somewhat shocked and surprised.
Time ticked by. After an unknown amount of time, the operating room doors were finally pushed open.
The lead surgeon took off his mask and walked out with a heavy expression, giving the impression that things weren’t looking too good.
A sliver of color finally surfaced in the depths of Yu Xiuqing’s bleak eyes. He wanted to stride over and ask, but his feet felt as heavy as lead, anchoring him in place.
His throat, devoid of water for two days, was exceptionally dry, burning as fiercely as if scorched by fire.
Was he a bit afraid of hearing bad news about Shen Yuan?
It was Qi Yunzhao who spoke up: “Doctor, how is the patient? Is he… saved?”
That last question was asked carefully. As he spoke, he even specifically stole a glance at the man, only to discover that the other was inadvertently revealing anxiety.
It was not hard to see that his boss might have that little fool in his heart, he just didn’t know how to love. He only knew how to use forceful methods to compel those around him into loyalty.
Facing their aggressive gazes, the doctor felt extremely intimidated, but he braced himself and said:
“The p-patient’s internal brain suffered severe damage. The electroshock stimulated the nervous system, causing a deep coma and multiple neurological disorders. It’s estimated that even if he wakes up, he will suffer from severe cognitive impairment.”
Severe… severe cognitive impairment? (Profound intellectual disability)
Didn’t that mean they wouldn’t even have the chance to question him?
Yu Xiuqing couldn’t help but clench his fingers tight. His heart trembled heavily, his voice laced with urgency:
“Can continued electrotherapy restore it?”
The doctor was horrified by this insane question. His lips trembled several times before he frantically explained:
“I apologize, I’m afraid not. Because the patient already possessed congenital brain defects, doing so would only worsen his condition, causing permanent cerebral palsy.”
Hearing this, the man’s body stiffened abruptly. He found the doctor’s conclusion unbelievable and unacceptable.
Why did this happen…
He had clearly tested it on lab mice before the electroshock; it was only supposed to temporarily stimulate forgotten memories.
But now they were telling him that not only had Shen Yuan failed to recover the forgotten things, but his condition had worsened…
As if seeing through his thoughts, the doctor hesitated repeatedly before speaking up:
“I believe electrotherapy can only delete a patient’s memories. There is no precedent in medical history of it restoring memories.”
“How is it possible…”
Yu Xiuqing muttered in a low voice, his brows furrowed tightly. He instinctively reached into his pocket for a cigarette, his trembling hand attempting several times but ultimately failing to pull one out.
Qi Yunzhao reminded him from the side: “Sanye, this is a hospital, no smoking.”
Yu Xiuqing temporarily abandoned the thought of smoking, looking up at the doctor: “When will he wake up?”
“The time of awakening is hard to determine. It might be a few hours, or perhaps a few days. It depends on the patient.”
The doctor wiped the cold sweat from his forehead with his sleeve. After thinking for a moment, he couldn’t help but offer an extra piece of advice:
“However, Yu Xiansheng should abandon this risky method of using electrotherapy to stimulate the brain and awaken memories. The patient’s current condition cannot withstand any further stimulation.”
