Are You Kidding Me! After Three Years as a Stand-in, You Say I’m the White Moonlight? Chapter 29

Chapter 29: Remember to Call Zhou Sijin for Me

By the time Chen Wei reached the hospital with the food containers, the sky was already fully bright.

Xiao Wu took the containers from his hands.

Shedding his mask and disguise, Chen Wei walked several steps to the bed and sat down.

The whip marks on Han Chi’s back hadn’t fully faded yet. Since he couldn’t lean against anything, he could only sit upright, gazing at Chen Wei with a face full of worry.

“After you went back yesterday, did Xu Cheng do anything to you?”

Yesterday at the hotel, Chen Wei had truly beaten Zhang Chen quite severely.

Having offended Zhang Chen, given Xu Cheng’s typical “urinary nature,” he would certainly try to use Chen Wei as a sacrificial offering to appease Zhang Chen’s wrath.

Chen Wei’s address wasn’t a secret. As the company’s director, it wouldn’t be difficult for Xu Cheng to find it.

Since Han Chi was in the hospital, even if Xu Cheng brought people to his home, they couldn’t touch him. However, Chen Wei lived alone, so Han Chi couldn’t stop worrying.

At the mention of Xu Cheng, the good mood Chen Wei had managed to maintain for most of the morning vanished instantly.

Sitting on the chair, Chen Wei’s lips curled into a faint, chilly smile. He looked at Han Chi and said lazily, “I actually hope he tries something.”

Han Chi’s hand, which was reaching for a bowl, paused in mid-air.

After a long moment, as if he had realized something, he quickly turned his head toward Chen Wei. “Does that mean… you’ve already thought of a countermeasure??”

Chen Wei shook his head honestly. “No.”

“???” Han Chi was lost.

Looking at Chen Wei’s completely indifferent expression, he had assumed the man had asked Zhou Sijin for help, hence his lack of concern.

Holding the bowl, Han Chi lost his appetite. He let out a soft sigh and asked, “Then what do you plan to do next?”

The corners of Chen Wei’s lips curved slightly; his expression was composed, yet it carried an indescribable, profound depth.

He parted his thin lips: “Wait.”

Han Chi didn’t know what he was waiting for.

Suddenly, an abrupt ringtone broke the silence of the ward.

Chen Wei picked up his phone and swiped to answer.

On the other end, Jiang Chuan’s cry for help rang clearly through the receiver into the ears of everyone present.

“Save me! Chen Wei!”

Once the call was disconnected, Chen Wei stood up.

Han Chi reached out to stop him.

Chen Wei said, “If I’ve guessed correctly, the fact that Jiang Chuan is being threatened by Xu Cheng this time must have everything to do with him tipping us off the other day.”

Han Chi took a deep breath. “Even if Jiang Chuan fell into Xu Cheng’s hands because he tipped us off, what does that have to do with you?”

As he spoke, Han Chi moved to pull out the IV needle in his hand.

Chen Wei was quick-eyed and pressed him down. “What are you doing?”

Han Chi panted heavily. “Xiao Wei, I caused this trouble myself. It has nothing to do with you. Let me go.”

Chen Wei pressed him back with a look of disapproval.

“Have you forgotten? I’m the one who hit Zhang Chen. Only if I personally show up will Zhang Chen possibly let this go.”

“Xiao Wei!” Out of anxiety, Han Chi’s voice began to crack.

However, Chen Wei only gave him a reassuring smile and comforted him, “Don’t worry, Brother Han. I know what I’m doing.”

Before leaving, Chen Wei didn’t forget to leave Han Chi with the most important instruction of the day:

“If I haven’t called you by dark, try calling Zhou Sijin for me.”

After leaving the hospital, Chen Wei didn’t immediately rush to Xingyao Media.

Since the goal for Xu Cheng and the others was Chen Wei himself, Xu Cheng wouldn’t dare do anything too extreme to Jiang Chuan before he arrived.

He just hadn’t expected Xu Cheng to trace the clues to Jiang Chuan so quickly.

Jiang Chuan’s sudden involvement had interrupted Chen Wei’s original plan.

Although Jiang Chuan’s betrayal of Han Chi in the past had been unscrupulous, at the hotel the other day, it was Jiang Chuan who gave him the tip-off. Because of that, he was able to successfully rescue Han Chi from Zhang Chen’s hands.

Based on this point alone, he couldn’t just sit by and watch Jiang Chuan get into trouble.

Fortunately, the matter wasn’t too thorny.

Even without Jiang Chuan, Chen Wei was going to meet Zhang Chen and the others eventually. Jiang Chuan’s appearance would, at most, make him a bit more passive in this situation.

But it wouldn’t cost him his life.

As the taxi slowed to a stop in front of a bank, Chen Wei pushed the door open and stepped out unhurriedly.

Entering the bank lobby, a staff member greeted him warmly and politely asked what service he required.

Chen Wei calmly took a bank card from his pocket and handed it over.

The staff member smiled and took it.

However, the moment they saw the bank card, their eyes widened in shock. They quickly looked up at Chen Wei.

Separated by his mask and black sunglasses, Chen Wei responded calmly:

“I’m here to open an account.”

While sitting in the taxi on the way to Xingyao Media, Chen Wei received a phone call as expected.

After hesitating for a long time, he eventually chose to answer.

The moment the call connected, a woman’s voice—gentle but filled with boundless surprise—came from the other end:

“Baby, are you finally willing to use the money Mom gave you?”

“…”

He was very uncomfortable with the term “Baby.” For a moment, Chen Wei didn’t know how to respond.

If possible, he had hoped he would never see the day he had to use that money.

But things rarely go as one wishes.

After a long pause, Chen Wei finally spoke with a slight hesitation, calling out softly, “Mom.”

“Ai! Baby,” she replied quickly. “What is it? Did something happen?”

Chen Wei pursed his lips and lowered his eyes. “No.”

With his “No,” there was a clear silence on the other end for a moment.

Though he felt a twinge of guilt, Chen Wei had to speak up:

“Mom, this money… I will return it to you with interest eventually.”

The initial surprise and joy on the other end were replaced by a sudden wave of sadness and loss.

Her voice, naturally characterized by the melodious tones of the south, became even softer as it was tinged with sorrow:

“Baby… do you really have to be so distant with your mother?”

Griping the phone tightly, Chen Wei unconsciously clenched his other hand inside his coat pocket.

If he could… he didn’t want to be like this either…

But he, a stain on her past, shouldn’t become an obstacle or a burden on her path toward light and happiness.

She should have a brilliant life of her own.

This brilliance didn’t belong to him, Chen Wei, nor did it belong to that damn man, and certainly not to anyone in the Chen family.

After hanging up, Chen Wei leaned back against the seat and lost himself in thought.

His mind drifted back to a rainy night many years ago.

Accompanied by a man’s angry curses, a woman’s sobbing, and the terrified, desperate screams of a child…

Chen Wei slowly closed his eyes.

That man—his father in name only.

Who knows what kind of “dog shit luck” he’d had to pick up his mother, who had accidentally become separated from her family while traveling.

He had first brought her home under the guise of being a “kind-hearted person.”

Ultimately, under the instigation of those two old bastards in the family, he had forcibly violated his mother.

A beautiful eighteen-year-old girl was thus trapped in a dark, sunless basement, living a life less than that of a dog or a pig every day.

They isolated her from all contact with the outside world.

Until he was born.

Only then was the woman allowed to walk out of that basement.

However, her husband’s incompetence, her parents-in-law’s cold eyes, her crying child, and a life of hardship day after day ground away all her joy and passion.

Until the second child was forced to be born.
