Chapter 30: Whether to See Zhang Chen is My Decision
“Handsome, we’ve arrived at Xingyao Media.”
the driver’s call pulled Chen Wei back from his memories.
Chen Wei opened his eyes slowly, but he remained leaning against the seat for a long time without moving.
“Handsome?” The driver turned around, puzzled.
He was momentarily stunned by Chen Wei’s face, which was sealed tightly behind sunglasses and a mask.
The driver blinked, looking out the window at Xingyao Media and then back at Chen Wei.
The driver asked, “Handsome? Are you a star?”
Chen Wei sat up and casually removed his sunglasses.
He fished a hundred-yuan bill from his wallet and passed it through the partition into the hands of the driver, who was staring at him in surprise.
“Thanks, keep the change.”
After leaving those polite words, he didn’t answer the driver’s question. Opening the door, Chen Wei stepped out with agile movements.
Sometime during the ride, a light snow had begun to fall.
At temperatures above freezing, the snowflakes couldn’t even last a moment on the ground before they completely dissipated.
Chen Wei strode forward without stopping toward the entrance of Xingyao Media.
Xu Cheng understood his personality.
The fact that he dared to so brazenly use Jiang Chuan to threaten him meant he had calculated from the start that Chen Wei would surely come to save Jiang Chuan for the sake of that tip-off.
Chen Wei stopped at the office door.
Foregoing the procedure of knocking, he lightly turned the handle.
With a crisp click, Chen Wei kicked the door open without expression.
The loud, bright sound of the door slamming against the wall reached Xu Cheng’s ears.
He looked up, his sinister eyes narrowing with displeasure.
Once he saw that the newcomer was Chen Wei, he quickly retracted his expression.
Xu Cheng stood up, a hypocritical smile plastered on his face, and was just about to speak.
“Where is Jiang Chuan?”
Chen Wei had long since seen through his tricks and had no patience for his false civility.
The moment he kicked the door open, he had swept his gaze through Xu Cheng’s office from inside to out.
Jiang Chuan was nowhere to be seen.
Knowing that Chen Wei had come specifically for Jiang Chuan, Xu Cheng was no longer in a hurry.
He sat back down in his office chair unhurriedly, crossing his legs. Gazing at Chen Wei in the doorway with a victor’s smile, he spoke with a thoroughly condescending tone:
“Is this the attitude you use to treat your benefactor?”
“Benefactor?”
Chen Wei reacted as if he had heard a particularly hilarious joke. He let out a cold laugh, the corners of his lips twitching in a sarcastic sneer.
“Xu Cheng, if only your ability to put gold on your own face was as good as your ability to manage artists.”
Over the years, how many artists had been so squeezed by Xu Cheng that they were willing to risk the pressure of paying breach of contract fees just to terminate their contracts with the company?
In their line of work, serving others with one’s beauty was an inescapable fate.
But no one was willing to obey Xu Cheng’s orders to sleep with those bosses who had strange kinks after they had already become famous.
On one hand, it lowered their own market value.
On the other hand, if such a “Party” were discovered, the artist would have to bear the risk of complete ruin alone.
Yet Xu Cheng was precisely the kind of person who tried to use small favors to seek big returns.
Otherwise, after three years, he wouldn’t still be dwelling on the fact that Chen Wei had rejected his proposal to sleep with someone.
Fortunately, Chen Wei was clever and had always been on guard, so he hadn’t fallen into Xu Cheng’s traps.
As for those other artists who had been set up by Xu Cheng—by the time they woke up, everything that should and shouldn’t have happened had already taken place.
Newcomers who had no other choice could only obediently follow Xu Cheng’s instructions and let themselves be manipulated by him from then on.
However, Xu Cheng was thick-skinned.
A couple of itchy, painless sarcastic remarks couldn’t affect him or cause even a fraction of a ripple in his expression.
Regarding Chen Wei’s words, Xu Cheng didn’t feel ashamed; instead, he felt proud.
“If you had obediently listened to me back then, would you have spent three years in the entertainment circle being as lukewarm as you are now?”
Bickering was meaningless. Chen Wei didn’t have any spare time to waste on nonsense.
Since Jiang Chuan wasn’t here…
He must have been arranged by Xu Cheng to be with Zhang Chen.
If he guessed correctly, Zhang Chen had likely set a trap specifically for him.
They were just waiting for him to step into the net they had prepared in advance when he went to save the person.
Chen Wei walked a few steps to the desk and stopped. Ignoring Xu Cheng’s cold mockery, he asked directly:
“Where is Zhang Chen?”
Xu Cheng stared at him for two seconds, then shifted his body, crossing his arms in a provocative counter-question:
“If you ask me, do I have to tell you?”
Having finally found a chance to easily manipulate Chen Wei, Xu Cheng wanted to take this opportunity to thoroughly vent the dissatisfaction he had bottled up for so long.
Chen Wei saw through his intention at a glance.
Pulling out the chair in front of the desk, he sat down and looked levelly at Xu Cheng. He spoke lazily, his voice confident and certain:
“You will tell me.”
“After all, I’m the one who hit Zhang Chen. You have to take me there to account for it.”
Ignoring the shock that suddenly rose in Xu Cheng’s eyes, Chen Wei’s tone was unhurried:
“But now, whether to see Zhang Chen is my decision.”
The sarcastic smile on Chen Wei’s lips successfully dazzled Xu Cheng’s eyes.
Just now, he suddenly realized that he had always thought of Chen Wei too simply.
In the past, he had only thought Chen Wei was stubborn and didn’t know how to pivot; he figured if he threw him to others to suffer a bit, the man would know what to do next.
But he had completely failed to expect that Chen Wei could so accurately manipulate his psychology, using a single sentence to easily turn the tables between them.
As Chen Wei said…
Zhang Chen had already given him a final ultimatum. He indeed needed to bring Chen Wei to Zhang Chen to account for it within today.
But Xu Cheng was simply unwilling to accept this.
He had never lost face like this in front of an artist.
The only two times it had happened, he had been thwarted by Chen Wei both times.
He glared at Chen Wei through gritted teeth:
“Aren’t you worried about Jiang Chuan’s life?”
Chen Wei’s knuckles lightly tapped the desk in front of him rhythmically. His face, devoid of any emotional ripple, made it impossible to guess what he was thinking.
After waiting for a long time without an answer, Xu Cheng gradually became restless. Even his attitude toward the man was no longer as arrogant and cold as before.
Who knows how much time passed, but Xu Cheng, left with no choice, was the first to compromise.
He softened his posture and lowered his tone, taking a business card from his drawer and handing it to Chen Wei.
“Zijin International Hotel. Once you get there, someone will naturally meet you.”
Except…
Chen Wei didn’t move.
He didn’t look at the business card, and he didn’t even give Xu Cheng a direct glance.
Xu Cheng bit his molars and stood up to question him: “What do you mean by this?”
The movement caused Chen Wei’s peripheral vision to flicker slightly.
Retracting his fingers, his eyes regained their usual calm:
“I said, whether to see Zhang Chen is my decision.”
