Are You Kidding Me! After Three Years as a Stand-in, You Say I’m the White Moonlight? Chapter 31

Chapter 31: Brother Will Buy You Many Small Cakes Later

Xu Cheng was nearly driven to death by Chen Wei’s indifferent attitude.

He had originally intended to seize the momentum and show off his authority, but who could have expected that Chen Wei would turn the tables so completely?

“Don’t even think about quietly bringing people to kidnap me. Before coming here, I already informed Han Chi that I was looking for you. If Han Chi doesn’t receive my call within the agreed time, he will call the police.”

Chen Wei’s icy warning successfully shattered the last bit of hope in Xu Cheng’s heart.

Xu Cheng, finally realizing he had been played by Chen Wei, lowered his head in resignation at this moment.

Taking a deep breath and clenching his fists, Xu Cheng spoke up proactively:

“What exactly do you want? What will it take for you to go find Zhang Chen?”

Sitting in a dessert shop by the roadside.

Chen Wei looked down and flipped through the video Xu Cheng had sent to his phone.

It was a USB drive.

Inside that drive were all the photos and videos Xu Cheng had secretly taken to manipulate the company’s artists.

The drive was handed to a professional for destruction.

The video showed the destruction process.

Initially, Xu Cheng hadn’t agreed.

But Chen Wei’s determined attitude had left him with no choice.

On second thought, Xu Cheng figured Chen Wei didn’t know if he had a backup anyway. They were just some photos; at worst, he could just take more in the future.

The video finished playing.

It was followed by a voice message from Xu Cheng.

“I’ve done as you asked. When do you plan to go find Zhang Chen?”

To be honest, Chen Wei didn’t know if he was doing the right thing.

According to his original plan, he had intended to use the money his mother gave him to pay the breach of contract fee. Once Han Chi’s contract expired, the two of them would leave Xingyao Media and start their own studio.

But Han Chi’s impulsive act had thrown all his plans into disarray.

Now that the situation had spiraled uncontrollably to this point, there was no longer any room for maneuver.

He couldn’t deal with Zhang Chen alone.

As of now, Chen Wei had no other choice but to let go and take a gamble.

Opening the input screen, Chen Wei replied to Xu Cheng: [Depends on my mood.]

After replying, Chen Wei turned off his phone.

The phone soon began to vibrate continuously.

Chen Wei was annoyed, so he simply muted it.

He looked up just as the server brought the cake he had ordered.

Looking at the small, exquisite cream cake in front of him, Chen Wei took a photo with his phone.

He opened Weibo and logged into his account.

There was no text, only a simple cake emoji, accompanied by the photo he had just taken.

After posting, Chen Wei put down his phone and picked up a fork.

He cut the cake into pieces, then picked up a forkful of cream-covered cake and put it in his mouth.

The moment the silky sweet cream touched his tongue, it quickly melted.

Chen Wei vaguely remembered a similar winter day.

After he and his younger brother had seen their mother off, he took the few yuan left from buying their mother’s bus ticket and ran with his brother to a cake shop to buy a “cake bowl.”

The ingredients of the cake bowl were simple.

Inside were the leftover scraps from making cake bases, topped with a dollop of colorful cream of an indistinguishable variety.

Using the transparent plastic fork provided by the owner, one could lift a piece with zero effort.

Under his brother’s wide-eyed, expectant gaze, Chen Wei stuffed the first bite into his brother’s open mouth.

The sweetness was so great that his brother narrowed his eyes in happiness.

The two of them crouched side-by-side at the entrance of the cake shop. His brother asked unclearly while swallowing:

“Brother, where did Mom go?”

Chen Wei didn’t answer; he just forked a second piece of cake into his mouth.

Looking at his brother, whose entire heart and soul had been conquered by the sweetness of the cake, Chen Wei smiled. He reached out dotingly to wipe away the cream residue from his brother’s mouth.

His brother asked him, “Brother, why aren’t you eating?”

Chen Wei said, “Mom told me to buy this specifically for you.”

His four-year-old brother didn’t understand much. Hearing his brother’s words, he smiled and said, “Mom is so good to me.”

Chen Wei smiled too. While smiling, he began to “brainwash” his brother:

“Mom is good to you. In exchange, shouldn’t you help Mom keep a secret?”

“Secret?” His brother didn’t understand. “What secret does Mom have?”

Chen Wei put his index finger to his lips and hushed him. “You saw Mom get on a bus and leave just now, right?”

His brother nodded.

Chen Wei explained, “That’s because Mom has to go out to earn money for us. Only after Mom earns money can she buy us lots and lots of small cakes.”

“But the fact that Mom went out to earn money for cakes must never be known by Dad or Grandpa and Grandma. Do you know why?”

“Why?” His brother asked innocently as he swallowed the cake.

“Because if Dad and the others find out, they will snatch all the money Mom earned. Then Mom won’t have any extra money to buy us cakes.”

The moment he heard there would be no cakes to eat, his brother immediately pouted. He grabbed Chen Wei’s hand, his eyes welling with tears.

“Brother, I don’t want Dad to snatch Mom’s money.”

Chen Wei smiled and rubbed his head. “Then if you go back later and Dad asks where Mom went, how will you answer?”

His brother reacted quickly and shook his head.

“I don’t know,” he said. “I don’t know where Mom went.”

Chen Wei nodded and forked the last piece of cake into his brother’s mouth as a reward.

Tossing away the cake bowl, Chen Wei took his brother’s hand.

Under his brother’s innocent gaze, Chen Wei looked determined and raised his right hand:

“Brother promises you, once I grow up, I will definitely buy you lots and lots of small cakes, so our Little A-Yan can eat his fill.”

So many years had passed in the blink of an eye. He indeed had the money to buy many cakes now.

But his brother had been missing without any news to this day.

If he had been just a little faster back then, bringing the medicine home…

Chen Wei’s palm subconsciously tightened.

If it weren’t for that man, how could his brother have run out of the house alone just because he couldn’t find anyone when he woke up?

“Sir, are you alright?”

The server’s concerned inquiry rang in his ear.

Chen Wei snapped back to reality.

Following her gaze, Chen Wei looked down.

Only then did he realize that because he had been lost in thought, the fork in his hand had been unknowingly squeezed out of shape.

Fortunately, there weren’t many people in the dessert shop right now.

Putting down the fork, Chen Wei looked up and spoke with an apologetic tone:

“I’m sorry.”

The server just looked at this man—who was still wearing sunglasses in the middle of winter—with a strange look.

For a moment, she felt he looked familiar, but she couldn’t recall where she had seen him.

“Perhaps, do you need help?” she leaned over and asked softly.

Looking at the deformed fork in his hand, Chen Wei looked up.

The server quickly grasped his meaning. She turned back to the service counter, took a new fork, and placed it on the plate in front of Chen Wei.

“Thank you,” Chen Wei said with a polite smile.

The server only smiled and replied, “It’s nothing. Please enjoy.”
