Chapter 18: We are Roommates

The dormitory door slowly pushed open, and the phone fell heavily onto the pillow.
Ruan Zhimian poked his small head out from the bed curtains while wrapped in the quilt, only to quickly dive back in once the door opened. His eyelashes trembled wildly as he stared with extreme nervousness at the gap where the curtains hung. His fingers gripped the corners of the quilt, wrapping himself even tighter; it felt as if his heart had stopped beating.
Why would someone come to his dorm? Was it a dormitory manager coming for an inspection? What if they saw him wearing the dress?
He sounded terrified, his voice not at all fierce despite trying to be. “Who… who are you?”
A pair of white Alpha sneakers came into view, followed by light blue denim trousers. Likely because he had been injured recently, the man’s lips were somewhat pale. “Apologies, I didn’t hear you clearly just now.”
“I am Shi He from the Finance Department, your roommate.”
“I didn’t stay in the dorms before due to family reasons, so I’ve arrived a bit late.”
In the corner of the room, the blackout curtains were stirred by a gust of wind.
The “bristling cat” with stray hairs sticking up stiffly pulled back the bed curtain, cautiously revealing a snowy-white, beautiful small face.
He didn’t dare look at Shi He at all. After his gaze flickered over and saw the familiar figure…
He quickly retracted it.
The little cat spoke in stutters. “I’m… changing clothes. Wait… wait a moment for me.”
Immediately after, the bed curtains were pulled shut.
Ruan Zhimian slumped against the wall, the corners of his eyes damp as he hugged Qiuqiu.
Wuwuwu, how—how—how could he be roommates with Shi He?!
What kind of plot was this? Was this world falling into chaos? Why, why, why?!
[Qiuqiu, I’m scared. Let’s go home to stay tonight.]
[Okay!]
Qiuqiu was also trembling in his arms. Every time Shi He appeared, it wouldn’t be long before it fell into a deep sleep.
One system, one host—both were piteous.
Shi He surveyed the dormitory. It was a double room that had recently been moved into, with a row consisting of a bed and a desk on both the left and right sides, along with a single wardrobe. On a three-tiered wooden shelf near the balcony, various small potted plants were arranged.
Shi He set down his laptop bag and walked unhurriedly to the balcony.
He leaned against the balcony doorframe, his fingertips brushing past a hanging pair of pink pajamas. Hearing the rustling sounds from within the bed curtains, his knuckles slowly tightened, tapping against the edge of the shelf.
Inside the curtains, Ruan Zhimian thought gloomily: Fortunately, when I was changing earlier, I brought all my clothes onto the bed.
Otherwise, he wouldn’t be able to live this down.
Ruan Zhimian lowered his head and fastened his shirt buttons.
He hid the dress inside the quilt.
Ruan Zhimian pulled the bed curtains tight, not revealing even a sliver of the bed. His dark eyes carefully scanned left and right. Seeing Shi He by the balcony, he spoke with a “natural” expression. “Shi He, are you going to live on campus?”
“Mhm.”
The tall, cold, and handsome Alpha looked up. He was dressed in a light-colored hoodie and blue jeans, looking refreshing and handsome—except for the bandage wrapped around his forehead, which ruined the vibe.
Shi He spoke, seemingly showing goodwill. “Sorry, I scared you by opening the door just now.”
“You’re injured?”
“I had some disputes with my family.”
Shi He was taller than him; Ruan Zhimian couldn’t see clearly while looking up.
Ruan Zhimian pulled out a chair and pressed the other man down to sit at the empty desk. His brow gradually furrowed, showing a bit of anger. “No matter the dispute, you can’t… hit people. Can’t things be discussed properly?”
Shi He’s phoenix eyes drooped faintly. From Ruan Zhimian’s perspective, he looked indescribably obedient. He paused, his gaze grazing past Ruan Zhimian’s rabbit slippers and porcelain-white ankles, before answering, “An old issue.”
Following that, he spoke with an air of “green tea” manipulation. “Young Master Ruan, I’ve returned suddenly and will likely stay in the dorm for a while. Am I bothering you?”
“No bother, this is your dormitory too.”
Ruan Zhimian’s virtue: he was easy to talk to.
Ruan Zhimian’s flaw: he was also too easy to talk to.
While Shi He unpacked, Ruan Zhimian also began to tidy up, stuffing everything he had ever photographed for Shi He into his drawers.
Taking advantage of Shi He going to the bathroom to put away his toiletries, Ruan Zhimian pulled open Shi He’s empty cabinet. He grabbed the several bags he had left there previously, wrapped them in a bedsheet, and shoved them all into his own wardrobe, securing it with a small lock.
These bags were full of unopened dresses.
It would be a disaster if they were discovered.
Shi He wiped down his bed and went to the door to bring in a folding mattress to lay out. He then spread the sheets with practiced ease.
Ruan Zhimian did a sneaky final check, hugged Qiuqiu, slung on his backpack, and lowered his head as he moved slowly toward the door.
“I have something to do today, so I’m going home first. Take your time setting up.”
Shi He turned around. His long, pale fingers exerted force, firmly trapping Ruan Zhimian in the corner of the hallway wall. A large shadow fell, completely encircling the person in front of him.
“Wait.”
The Alpha, who was on the first day of his susceptibility period, lowered his eyes. For some reason, he caught that faint scent of lily of the valley on Ruan Zhimian again.
“Is… is there something?”
“Ruan Zhimian, are you going home because of me?”
Ruan Zhimian looked up with his palm-sized face, replying piteously, “Of course not.”
How could he admit it?
The Alpha loosened his grip, saying thoughtfully, “I know I’m not a popular person. It’s normal for you to dislike me. Since I was a child, I haven’t had many friends…”
“This matter is my fault.”
Sentence after sentence pelted down. Even if Shi He wasn’t blocking him, Ruan Zhimian felt like he couldn’t move an inch.
“You don’t need to go home. The Ruan residence is far; commuting is inconvenient.”
The Alpha picked up his backpack, his dark eyes downcast in a quiet manner. “I’ll stay at a hotel and find a place to move into tomorrow.”
As soon as he finished speaking, the dizzy little cat anxiously grabbed the hem of Shi He’s hoodie. “No, I don’t dislike you.”
“I… I’m just not used to living with others.”
“Don’t go.”
