Part 2
Hai Di followed his lead and leaned down to listen. Warm lips brushed against his ear as a whisper drifted in. “Call me ‘Daddy’—”
Seeing the momentary blankness on Hai Di’s face, Jiang Si couldn’t contain his laughter. He leaned against the wall, his eyes curving into crescents. However, those clear eyes were soon hooded by a misty, damp haze. The porcelain-white skin around his eyes was layered with color, shifting from pale pink to a deep crimson. Shimmering droplets clung to his lower lashes, refusing to fall until a few blinks sent them tracing wet paths down his cheeks.
Looking at his pitiful appearance, Hai Di’s suppressed passion suddenly erupted. The more he felt for him, the more he wanted to exert force—to break him, just to see more of his emotions spill over.
And so, he lifted Jiang Si’s slightly long hair and buried his face in the curve of that pale, slender neck. His deep breaths and the scorching heat radiating from his trembling muscles surged between them, as they leaned on one another in the narrow space.
Autumn in Rongcheng felt like the “return of the south” humidity in G Province. The overwhelming dampness felt like it could drown a person in water vapor, yet within that sticky moisture, there was a restless, stifling heat. It flowed everywhere with the night wind, rustling the tender new buds and flowing through slender branches. The rustling sounds lasted all night until the break of dawn, when the heat met the cold and condensed into dew, hanging precariously from the trembling tips of the branches.
The bedsheets were ones Jiang Si had recently changed—a smooth, silk material that felt cool and comfortable against the skin. But now, soaked with moisture, their color had turned significantly darker.
Jiang Si lay lazily on his side, covered by a thin quilt. His dyed blue hair was scattered in messy strands, while more of his dark hair clung damply to his neck from sweat. His eyes were half-closed, and he didn’t blink for a long time, appearing to have already fallen asleep.
After watching him for a while, Hai Di leaned in with great contentment, placed a light kiss on the tip of his nose, and got out of bed.
“I want water,” Jiang Si said weakly.
Hai Di complied. He approached with a glass of warm water, but before he could hand it over, he was kicked. Jiang Si turned his head, lifting his eyelids to shoot him an annoyed look. “Full confession time—were you prepared for this today?”
“What do you want to hear?” Hai Di asked. “Drink some water first to moisten your throat.”
His dry lips gradually became hydrated. Jiang Si took two sips in that position and then turned his head away, signaling for him to take the glass. “Explain yourself. How long have you been preparing?”
“I picked it up at the airport on a whim today. I didn’t expect to actually use it.”
“Is that all?”
“Mhm.”
Only then did Jiang Si let it go. Regardless, he had enjoyed himself too, so it wasn’t a loss. He threw on a random hoodie and shorts, stepped into his slippers, and padded out of the bedroom. A few seconds later, he poked his head back in. “Do you want a late-night snack?”
Hai Di’s eyes darkened as his gaze swept over a stretch of Jiang Si’s pale legs. He smiled slightly. “Anything is fine.”
“I’ll go make some noodles then.” Jiang Si went to the kitchen and made the simplest bowl of egg noodles with two eggs.
“Shen Hu didn’t even feed you when he brought you over?” Seeing his busy figure in the kitchen, Hai Di realized in hindsight that Jiang Si hadn’t eaten a single bite since coming home so late.
“I haven’t eaten all day,” Jiang Si said, shooting him a sidelong glance. “The only reason I didn’t pass out from your antics was because of my youthful stamina.”
Hai Di walked up behind him, wrapped his arms around his waist, and rested his chin on Jiang Si’s shoulder. He chuckled, “You’ve worked hard. Let me give you a massage.” As he spoke, his hands began to rub and press against Jiang Si’s waist.
Suddenly, a fleeting sense of déjà vu flashed before his eyes.
He froze in place, staring at Jiang Si’s back in silence.
It felt as though he had performed this exact same action once before.
Once the water boiled, he added the noodles. They were ready in just a few minutes. Jiang Si served two bowls and topped them with sauce and egg. Only then did he notice Hai Di’s strange expression. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.” Hai Di returned to normal, took two pairs of chopsticks, and followed him to the dining table.
Jiang Si didn’t know what he was thinking. He only ate a few bites before putting his chopsticks down. Having gone so long without food, he had lost his appetite. He propped his chin on his hand and idly toyed with his phone.
“The movie’s release date is set,” Hai Di suddenly mentioned. “It’ll be during the National Day holiday.”
“?!” Jiang Si was shocked. “So soon?”
“It’s not soon. It was originally meant for the summer holidays, but we sent it back for rework, which delayed it by several months. It only finished the review process a couple of days ago and is being scheduled now.”
“The SARFT review shouldn’t be that fast.” Jiang Si had experience in the industry; he had seen slow reviews where a movie was stuck for two or three years until the project was essentially dead. It had only been about a month, yet there was already a result.
He quickly realized. “You went back to Ning City because of this?”
“I just had a meal with the director of the Bureau. It didn’t take much effort.” Hai Di told him not to overthink it. “The movie only changed the ending; there wasn’t much to review. It was bound to be fast.”
He spoke lightly, but Jiang Si wasn’t an outsider to the industry and wouldn’t be so easily fooled.
Jiang Si simply smiled and remained noncommittal, though a plan began to form in his mind.
After resting at home for a few days, Shen Hu called with some rather unpleasant news. At that moment, Jiang Si had just woken up. He could barely open his eyes, and when he spoke, his voice was startlingly raspy.
“What’s the matter?”
“…Do you have a cold?” Shen Hu asked, puzzled as he looked at the weather outside. “It’s over twenty degrees out there.”
“Too many all-nighters, my immunity dropped.” Jiang Si coughed dryly. “Is there something up?”
Hai Di draped an arm over Jiang Si’s bare waist and leaned in, nuzzling his straight nose against Jiang Si’s shoulder. Jiang Si could only whisper a warning for him to stop messing around.
“The Miyata family likely knows the situation. the State of Wa has been applying diplomatic pressure for us to release Gong Tianye. In a week at most, he will be repatriated.”
Jiang Si was instantly awake. He pushed Hai Di’s arm away and sat up. The quilt slid down his shoulders, barely covering his lean waist.
The sound of the fabric rustling reached Shen Hu’s ears. He checked the time. “You’re still not out of bed.”
“That’s not important.” Jiang Si’s voice was hoarse. “You said he’s being repatriated? But according to the principle of territorial jurisdiction, he committed murder within China’s borders. At the very least, he should serve his full sentence here before being sent back.”
“Using sorcery to kill someone cannot be used as formal evidence. In other words, we have no way to charge him with murder. To the outside world, he appears innocent,” Shen Hu said. “Repatriating him is something we have to do. However, we will demand equivalent concessions; we won’t let him go back so easily.”
“Demanding the return of the Yiren and Feathered figurines?” Jiang Si asked.
Shen Hu sneered. “That depends on whether the Miyata family is willing to bleed for this junior of theirs. There’s a lot more missing from the Southwest Southwest King of Yueling tomb than just those.”
Jiang Si: “Understood. Is there anything I can do?”
“I’ll find you if I need you.” Shen Hu paused for a moment. “By the way… take care of your health.”
Jiang Si said his thanks and hung up.
Hai Di watched him with open eyes and said a bit sourly, “Shen Hu sure comes looking for you often.”
“He has official business,” Jiang Si said helplessly. “Don’t get jealous over nothing; he’s a priest.”
