Chapter 22: The Social Mixer part 1
The little white rabbit’s brain was still in a state of complete mental blankness.
Of the five people on the other end, aside from his three familiar roommates, were Prince Elvis and Wei Yuanqing.
One was Prince Elvis, who was suspected of wanting to kidnap the little white rabbit to raise as a house pet at any given moment, and the other was Wei Yuanqing, who was suspected of being a telepath.
Yun Yingzhi: “…”
Yun Yingzhi’s eyelids twitched violently again as he stared blankly at the five of them.
Suddenly, the tiny rabbit’s body shivered. He wobbled, finally realizing what a terrifying thing had just occurred.
And then…
Without even considering how rude it was, his hand shook, and he disconnected the call immediately.
Staring at the now-dark holographic projection, the little rabbit blinked his large eyes and began to ponder: what exactly had happened during that period of time?
Meanwhile, the hovercar was about to arrive at the hotel.
Yun Yingzhi didn’t want to face Elvis and the others at all right now. Before meeting them, he had to clear his head and figure out what had transpired.
Yun Yingzhi said, “Uncle Zhang, stop the car for a moment. Let me catch my breath.”
Hearing this, the driver lowered the hovercar into a temporary parking spot below.
In a state of dazed confusion, Yun Yingzhi opened the car window to let the oncoming wind hit his face, hoping to calm his nerves.
Oh, the nerves did not calm down.
Recalling the events from before, he had a rough idea of what had happened.
He had been manufacturing source weapons in the studio all afternoon. On the way to the hotel in the hovercar, Yu Feiwen had called him.
He had been too tired then, so he probably…
Unknowingly, he had fallen straight asleep.
Yun Yingzhi still had a fairly accurate self-assessment; his life only consisted of “falling asleep,” never “fainting.” Therefore, he had most likely just fallen asleep.
By the time he woke up, the call was still connected, and the people on the other end had increased from three to five. The two additions were the two people he currently wanted to face the least.
Prince Elvis and Senior Wei Yuanqing.
Yun Yingzhi took a deep breath, transformed from his rabbit form back into his human form, and looked at the driver.
Through the rearview mirror, the driver’s eyes met Yun Yingzhi’s.
Yun Yingzhi forced himself to stay calm, but in reality, he was far from it. He couldn’t control his emotions.
His face slumped into a grumpy pout. After a moment of silence, he asked, “Uncle Zhang, how long was I out?”
Uncle Zhang’s eyelids twitched. He could sense that Yun Yingzhi’s mental state was on the verge of collapsing. He replied, “…You fell asleep less than five minutes after getting into the car.”
Yun Yingzhi thought to himself that he’d gotten into the car around 7:20 PM. Now…
It was already 8:05 PM. He was late.
A notification chimed on his personal optical computer—a message from Yu Feiwen.
Yun Yingzhi remembered that one of his goals for coming to the mixer today, besides eating, was to hand over the source weapon.
He searched around and, after a thorough look, found the source weapon on the floor mat.
His crumbling mood improved slightly upon seeing the weapon. This was a source weapon he had crafted with his own hands.
As he tucked it into his pocket, his peripheral vision caught a gift shop through the car window. A massive advertisement projection displayed various gift boxes.
Startled, Yun Yingzhi realized belatedly that the source weapon he intended to sell to Yu Feiwen didn’t even have a packaging box.
He thought to himself that he had to buy a box. Only then would the gift look high-end, elegant, and classy.
Gazing at the gift shop outside the window, Yun Yingzhi finally asked the question he was dreading: “Uncle Zhang, when I… when I was sleeping…” He hesitated, too embarrassed to finish the sentence.
Uncle Zhang looked at Yun Yingzhi with a pitying gaze. Knowing what he wanted to ask, he said, “From the very beginning, you transformed into your second form.”
Truly adorable.
Yun Yingzhi: “…Oh.”
His face took on a soulless expression, and his heart was weeping.
He felt quite unwell.
After a moment, he asked again, “I didn’t do anything… strange, did I?”
For example, grinding his teeth, snoring, and so on…
Uncle Zhang paused, his expression suddenly becoming very complicated.
Yun Yingzhi watched Uncle Zhang nervously, feeling like he was about to cry.
Uncle Zhang said, “…Does rolling around on the seat count?”
Yun Yingzhi’s expression shattered.
How old was he? How could he still roll around while sleeping?
No, that wasn’t the point. The point was that he had live-streamed himself rolling around in his sleep in front of five people.
Yun Yingzhi sniffled, his mind a tangled mess, but he bravely pressed on: “…W-Was it just rolling?”
Uncle Zhang paused, then pointed to the seat. “From one edge to the other, rolling all the way to the bottom, and then rolling back,” he added, “Several times.”
Yun Yingzhi: “…”
The corners of Yun Yingzhi’s mouth slumped downward. His mental state had officially collapsed.
He let the wind blow on him for a while longer to calm down before asking, “A-And then?”
Uncle Zhang: “…You almost fell off.” He paused, then continued, “But I caught you just in time. Luckily, you weren’t hurt.” As he spoke, he patted his chest, his gaze toward Yun Yingzhi becoming even more tender.
Yun Yingzhi: “…”
Yun Yingzhi’s body swayed. Under Uncle Zhang’s worried gaze, he managed to grab the door handle in time to keep himself from collapsing onto the seat.
Right now, he really wanted to bash his head against a wall.
Yun Yingzhi thought: Maybe I just shouldn’t attend the mixer?
His optical computer chimed again. Yu Feiwen was calling him once more.
At the same time, Yun Yingzhi’s stomach let out a loud growl. He was incredibly hungry.
He thought to himself that humans were just like that—even if one’s mental state was shattered, the body remained honest. It would feel hunger and have basic physiological needs.
Yun Yingzhi also felt that those stories on the Star Network about people losing their appetite for days and dropping twenty pounds because of a breakup were practically impossible for him.
Even after breaking up with Huai Boshe, he still ate and drank as usual. Life had to go on.
Yun Yingzhi shook his head, pushing those troublesome thoughts aside. What he needed to do now was…
To bravely pretend that nothing had happened, go to the mixer to eat, hand the source weapon to Yu Feiwen, and settle the final payment.
Yun Yingzhi took a deep breath and said, “Uncle Zhang, wait for me here. I’m going to buy a gift box.”
Uncle Zhang replied with a “Alright.”
Yun Yingzhi headed into the roadside gift shop.
The shop he went to was one frequently visited by students. It sold all sorts of gift boxes—cheap ones for a dozen Imperial Credits, and expensive ones for at most one or two hundred.
In the source weapon manufacturing world, the standard boxes for mass-produced weapons were white acrylic boxes with velvet lining. They were quite exquisite. Depending on the grade, the cheapest boxes were three hundred, while the expensive ones cost thousands.
Yun Yingzhi had no concept of this.
His exposure to source weapons came from two sources: Alvin’s studio and the Source Weapon Manufacturing Department at Fanse Academy.
For instance, the three weapons he had handed over to the military today didn’t have any packaging at all; that was the norm.
Or rather, for products from Alvin’s studio, they didn’t need to worry about packaging; others would handle everything. Thus, in Yun Yingzhi’s mind, there was no concept of source weapons needing high-end, elegant packaging. This was the same in the manufacturing department.
Students there would manufacture or modify weapons for the combat students at prices far below market value. Everyone was very close, so nobody wasted extra money on packaging.
According to Yun Yingzhi’s initial thought, he should just hand over the weapon directly. What was the point of packaging?
However, the weapon he was giving to Yu Feiwen today was the first commission he had taken based on his own merit. He felt he needed to give his client a great experience!
Even if he didn’t have much money, he absolutely had to buy the most expensive “house” for the source weapon so it could live inside comfortably.
Entering the gift shop, he began checking the prices.
The cheapest gift box sets were only a dozen credits, and most were twenty or thirty—very cheap. He felt only the more expensive gift boxes were worthy of the source weapon he had crafted.
He turned his gaze to the shop assistant.
At that moment, the assistant was captivated by Yun Yingzhi’s beauty. she stared at him in a daze until Yun Yingzhi called out to her. Snapping out of it, she offered a warm smile and good service, asking, “How can I help you?”
