Chapter 45: Did the Major Take a Fancy to Someone Else’s Fiancé? Part 1

Yu Shi wasn’t allowed much rest before he was taken to another room that resembled a study.

After a short wait, a man dressed as a diplomat entered.

He questioned Yu Shi about his identity in the Desai language, claiming it was a routine check. Zheng Miaoran showed no signs of nervousness as she stood to the side, watching them converse.

Seeing her reaction, Yu Shi’s worst suspicions were confirmed: this diplomat had likely been bought off.

He spoke in Desai to identify himself. “I am a national-level researcher for Tiangui. I have been kidnapped by these people. Please help me contact the Tiangui embassy.”

The diplomat looked regretful. “I’m afraid I cannot help you with that.”

“Are you really going to allow a group of spies to pass?” Yu Shi’s voice was cold. “This is a violation of interstellar law! Desai and Tiangui have had diplomatic ties for fifty-three years. Is this how you treat an ally?”

The diplomat looked hesitant for a moment before feigning ignorance. He spread his hands and said, “I’m sorry, I don’t understand what you’re saying. If you have any other needs, you can speak with this lady.”

No matter what Yu Shi said after that, the man acted as if he didn’t understand, playing the part of someone with a language barrier.

Yu Shi was fluent in six interstellar languages, and his pronunciation and grammar were flawless. He let out a sigh of disappointment.

Zheng Miaoran urged, “Finished?”

Yu Shi cradled his injured arm, no longer bothering to struggle. The diplomat nodded to her.

A voice came through Zheng Miaoran’s earpiece. After a moment, she responded irritably, “Do I really have to go over? I’m dealing with this Desai official… Fine, I understand…”

She glanced at Yu Shi. “I have to step out. Stay put.”

Yu Shi said nothing. He looked out the window. The room was on the third floor.

If he tried jumping… it might be possible.

Zheng Miaoran reached the door but then turned back. She said irritably, “Get up. You’re coming with me.”

“Don’t think I don’t know what you were saying to that man. I may not understand Desai, but he isn’t going to help you escape. From now until we board the starship, you aren’t leaving my sight.”

She was being excessively cautious, clearly wary of Yu Shi. He said tonelessly, “You aren’t even Olo. Why are you working so hard for Qin Yin? Is the pay that good?”

“Hmph, what do you know?” Zheng Miaoran snapped.

Yu Shi said, “He found a compatible gland for your transplant when you were sick, but do you know where that gland came from?”

To his surprise, Zheng Miaoran didn’t address his point. Instead, she looked at him with a complex expression. “It seems you really have forgotten everything. If you still remembered, you wouldn’t be asking me that.”

Yu Shi’s mind raced. He had guessed correctly—he really had known the Zheng siblings when they were children.

Zheng Miaoran didn’t speak again. she took him by car to the docks where the starship was moored.

The soldiers were currently transporting containers that had passed inspection. It would likely be another day before they could board.

Yu Shi surveyed his surroundings and noticed a human-sized container. This crate looked special. It was covered in seals, and the patterns on it looked strangely familiar.

As the soldiers were moving the container, the diplomat from earlier walked over, gesturing for them to stop.

“What is he doing now? I thought we were inspected,” Zheng Miaoran said impatiently.

The translator explained things to the diplomat, but the man shook his head firmly. He pointed to a red ‘Fail’ stamp on the seal, his expression turning solemn.

Zheng Miaoran said, “Ignore him. Keep moving. Tell him to take it up with the embassy representative.”

Yu Shi interjected, “He says the container is sealed and hasn’t passed security. He won’t allow it on the ship.”

Zheng Miaoran flared up instantly. “I have a permit from the embassy! Are you blind? You can’t see the words? This container is going up today! There aren’t any dangerous weapons inside; what are you afraid of? You’re a man; why are you being so meticulous and checking for so long? I’ve had enough of you!”

Yu Shi raised an eyebrow and translated her words exactly.

The diplomat’s face turned purple with rage. He began gesturing wildly as he spoke a string of sentences.

She looked at Yu Shi irritably. He translated calmly, “He says the representative didn’t mention this to him. He wants you to take the container back for re-inspection. This affects his career, and he won’t let you board with it under any circumstances. Also, he says your manners are atrocious and you’re the most unreasonable female Alpha he’s ever met.”

The translator standing nearby didn’t dare make a sound. He hadn’t intended to translate those specific insults.

Zheng Miaoran’s face flushed red with anger. She stepped aside to make a phone call.

Five minutes later, she returned and glared at the diplomat. “I’m taking it back right now to be inspected by your representative personally. Just you wait, you bastard!”

The diplomat shouted back, his face red, “You should have done that from the start! I’m just following protocol! You’re completely unreasonable!”

Yu Shi shrugged. “He’s using some very colorful language.”

Zheng Miaoran pointed a finger at Yu Shi’s nose. “I’ll deal with you once I’ve finished this task, you prick.”

The translator: “…”

This guy was just here to stir the pot.

Yu Shi went back with them in the car. He asked casually, “What’s inside the container?”

Zheng Miaoran said coldly, “That is none of your business.”

“The diplomat said the container passed the weapons check but failed the infrared scan,” Yu Shi said. “Is it a person or an animal? It’s been quiet this whole time; it must be a corpse. Why are you transporting a body back?”

Zheng Miaoran knew he hadn’t translated properly earlier. She gritted her teeth and glared at him.

Yu Shi continued, “Is it a fallen spy? Let me guess… is it Zhou Qin?”

Zheng Miaoran sneered. “He isn’t worth it. He was a throwaway pawn. The Major has no use for someone who betrays their own country.”

“Hmm. So there really is a person inside.”

Zheng Miaoran realized she had been baited into revealing information again. She went quiet for a moment before saying, “You’ll never guess who it is. Stop meddling.”

They returned to the embassy, and the soldiers moved the crate. As Yu Shi stood near it, he felt a sudden, inexplicable sense of palpitations.

The patterns on the container filled him with a strange sense of familiarity.

It was a subtle feeling—as if he were being tangled in a thousand spiderwebs. It made his heart feel slightly uneasy.

He was left in the transport van with two armed soldiers. Zheng Miaoran clearly didn’t trust him.

Yu Shi closed his eyes and searched his memory for those patterns.

Before he could reach a conclusion, the van suddenly jolted violently. The three of them were nearly thrown from their seats. The two soldiers immediately raised their weapons, aiming them at the door.

An alarm sounded, indicating a rear-end collision.

The two soldiers exchanged a look. One stepped out while the other kept his eyes fixed on Yu Shi.

Through the open door, Yu Shi saw an Alpha, a government vehicle from Desai.

The person in the back seat stepped out. When Yu Shi saw his face, his heart hammered against his ribs.

The owner of the car was a distinguished-looking young Alpha. The soldier froze for a moment before lowering his weapon. “Secretary Chen, it’s you.”

Their conversation drifted in through the gap in the door. The man known as Secretary Chen said politely, “My apologies. I was in a rush to pick up some files, and my driver was a bit too hasty. Is everyone in the van alright?”

“We’re fine. We thought it was a hijacking.”

“Haha, Desai is a land of law and order. You can rest easy; no one is going to hijack a van in broad daylight. By the way, may I take a look inside just to confirm their safety?” Secretary Chen asked.

His tone was gentle and kind, making it difficult to refuse.

The soldier hesitated. “That… might not be very convenient.”

Secretary Chen said, “I just want a quick look to make sure no one is injured. It’ll be a hassle if there are complaints later. Please, open the door. I need to get to my errand.”

The soldier had no choice but to open the door.

Inside the van, Yu Shi and Secretary Chen locked eyes. Then, they both looked away.

The soldier quickly shut the door. “You see? No one is hurt.”

“Excellent. Thank you.” The man replied with a smile.
