Chapter 14: Chu Baihan
Only I Am the Filthiest
The exact moment Zhao Yu was spouting those filthy words and reaching out his hand toward Yuan An, Yuan An knitted his brows and lifted his right leg.
Then, with lightning speed, he forcefully kicked Zhao Yu’s left knee!
“Ow—”
Zhao Yu squealed in pain, his body twisting as he wailed. However, because his left wrist was still tightly gripped by someone, this sudden twist made him look exactly like a duck being lifted by its neck.
Yuan An’s eyes widened slightly in surprise as he looked at Chu Baihan, who had intercepted Zhao Yu’s hand.
He hadn’t expected Chu Baihan to step in and stop Zhao Yu; this was practically equivalent to helping him.
Chu Baihan hadn’t expected Yuan An to kick Zhao Yu either, and almost subconsciously turned his head to look at him.
“Yuan An, are you fucking asking for death?!” Zhao Yu roared at Yuan An, his eyes ready to burst with rage.
Chu Baihan withdrew his gaze from Yuan An. Still gripping Zhao Yu’s hand tightly, he frowned and said, “Watch your words, and keep your hands to yourself.”
The moment his voice fell, Zhao Yu immediately stared at him in utter disbelief.
Yuan An also cast a somewhat perplexed glance at Chu Baihan.
Pointing at his own nose, Zhao Yu looked at Yuan An and said in a trembling voice, “Brother Chu, this is Yuan An we’re talking about. No matter how much of a gentleman you are, you can’t help the very Yuan An who bullied Lu Suichu!”
Chu Baihan froze for a moment.
Just now, after seeing Yuan An inside the room, he had only felt a wave of impatience, so he remained standing by the door instead of entering. Yet, his peripheral vision had involuntarily tracked the situation inside.
That irritability in his heart reached its absolute boiling point the exact moment Zhao Yu reached out his hand toward Yuan An.
Without a second thought, he had stepped forward to intercept Zhao Yu’s hand, preventing him from touching Yuan An’s face.
This was truly…
Like seeing a ghost.
Chu Baihan released Zhao Yu’s hand uncomfortably, but his body didn’t budge. He remained standing protectively in front of Yuan An’s side.
After a long pause, he finally forced out a single sentence: “Saying things like that is improper. It’s bad.”
Zhao Yu was left utterly speechless. But since the Chu family’s power far exceeded that of the Zhao family, he was at best a sycophantic hanger-on to Chu Baihan, and absolutely lacked the courage to get angry with him.
Thus, he could only take out his rage on Yuan An and the agent. “What are you looking at? Get the hell out of my apartment! Yuan An, if you ever come crawling back to beg me to rent this place next time, it won’t just be the requirement I mentioned earlier!”
Yuan An’s eyes turned cold as he looked at him. “Hejiang City isn’t a place where only you, Young Master Zhao, own apartments. I won’t ever end up with nowhere to live or become so destitute that I need to beg you.”
With that, he thought it over, and before leaving, he lifted his leg again, swiftly delivering another kick to Zhao Yu’s knee while the latter wasn’t paying attention.
Then, Yuan An dragged the agent straight out the door.
Although that kick wasn’t as powerful as the first one, both had struck Zhao Yu’s left knee perfectly, causing him to howl in pain once more as he doubled over.
Afterward, he instinctively wanted to give chase to settle the score with Yuan An, but was once again stopped by Chu Baihan.
This time, Zhao Yu couldn’t hold back and roared, “Brother Chu! Didn’t you see that little beast kick me again?! What is wrong with you today, constantly protecting him?!”
Chu Baihan furrowed his brows and said, “Even if Yuan An has truly left the Lu family, he is still Uncle Lu’s son.”
The unspoken implication was: He isn’t someone you can humiliate.
Zhao Yu’s fury was instantly choked back into his throat.
He gnashed his teeth in resentment, feeling an immense wave of regret. Of all the things he could have done today, why did he have to bring this great saint, Chu Baihan, to Linjiang Garden?
Zhao Yu’s lips mumbled for a bit, his eyes dodging. “I just wanted to state the requirement for the rent to be thirty thousand yuan a month.”
“You know perfectly well what you wanted to say.” Chu Baihan stopped looking at him, dropping these cold words before leaving ahead of him.
Staring at his retreating back, Zhao Yu gnashed his teeth with hatred, cursing under his breath as he smashed a nearby desk lamp.
…
Chu Baihan encountered Yuan An downstairs.
He seemed to be deliberately waiting there for someone; the agent had already left.
After a brief thought, Chu Baihan walked over to Yuan An’s side. “Are you waiting for me?”
Yuan An turned his head, then immediately averted his eyes. “Zhao Yu is a petty man who never forgets a grudge, but Xiao Liu is innocent.”
Zhao Yu couldn’t do anything to Yuan An for the time being, but with his temperament, he would certainly take it out on other innocent and weak bystanders.
For example, the agent Xiao Liu, who had just witnessed Young Master Zhao’s most humiliating moment.
Yuan An wasn’t afraid of Zhao Yu’s retaliation, but he didn’t want to drag Xiao Liu into it.
He knew Chu Baihan; this man was very kind toward others, so he wanted Chu Baihan to step in and at least protect Xiao Liu.
Upon hearing this, Chu Baihan shook his head in disappointment. “Yuan An, Zhao Yu is just a bit quick-tempered. There’s no need to think so poorly of him. He won’t do anything.”
Yuan An was left utterly speechless. He even wanted to roll his eyes, but managed to restrain himself.
Catching his expression, Chu Baihan knew Yuan An was dissatisfied with him and didn’t believe a word he said.
Lowering his gaze, he said, “You are always like this, full of malice toward everyone.”
Hearing this, Yuan An stared fixedly at Chu Baihan, unable to believe his own ears.
After a long silence, he let out a soft, cynical scoff. “Heh.”
Yuan An’s body trembled uncontrollably. He tried his best to suppress the fury in his chest, the veins popping on his tightly clenched fists as he said, “Right, you’re absolutely right, Great Saint. In your heart, everything and everyone is beautiful!”
He paused, giving a self-deprecating smile as he practically squeezed a single sentence out of his throat: “Only I am the filthiest.”
As soon as the words left his mouth, tears rapidly pooled in his eyes, the rims turning crimson.
Immediately after, sensing the tears slipping down from his eyes, Yuan An quickly averted his face, refusing to spare Chu Baihan another single glance.
He had grown up with Chu Baihan. Before the age of sixteen, Chu Baihan was the only splash of color in his otherwise monochrome, bleak life. After the age of sixteen, Chu Baihan became the final stroke of black ink that completed that darkness.
That was the year Lu Suichu had just returned to the Lu family.
Yuan An was naturally incredibly curious about this newly arrived older brother who looked exactly like him. He approached him with utmost caution, and upon finding that the other was very gentle, he couldn’t help but follow him around everywhere.
The two had been in the same class in high school. Once, after school let out, he helped Lu Suichu return the sports equipment. Afterward, Yuan An went upstairs to retrieve their backpacks, but when he returned, Lu Suichu was nowhere to be found.
He searched all over the school grounds, and when he couldn’t find him there, he went to the streets near the school to search, but he still hadn’t found Lu Suichu even when darkness fell.
In the end, it was Chu Baihan, who happened to be passing by the equipment room to clear his mind while practicing his instrument, who heard the cries for help and found Lu Suichu.
Because he had been too panicked in the pitch-black equipment room that time, Lu Suichu suffered an attack and was hospitalized. Only then did they learn that Lu Suichu had a heart condition.
Afterward, Lu Chengyue, Lu Shengheng, and Chu Baihan actually unanimously believed that Yuan An had deliberately locked Lu Suichu inside the equipment room.
Accusations, complaints, disappointment, furious scoldings… everything rained down upon him. No one had ever noticed the two heavy backpacks hanging off his shoulders, or his pants completely covered in mud from searching for someone everywhere in the pouring rain.
Afterward, Yuan An went to find Chu Baihan to explain, but Chu Baihan only thought he was lying, and became even more convinced that he had intentionally locked Lu Suichu away, causing him to suffer the medical attack.
From then on, in Chu Baihan’s heart, his name became synonymous with “malicious intent”.
“Yuan An…” Chu Baihan stared blankly at him, instinctively reaching out his hand.
He seemed to want to help wipe away his tears.
Yuan An took a deep breath, his emotions already considerably calmer. Stepping back to evade Chu Baihan’s hand, he said, “I hope you can exercise your saintly spirit, Eldest Young Master Chu, to guarantee that Xiao Liu’s life will not be disrupted.”
With that, Yuan An turned straight around and walked away.
Leaving Chu Baihan standing completely frozen in place, his hand still suspended in mid-air, his expression unreadable as he stared blankly, lost in thought.
