Chapter 99: I’ll Die by Your Side Even if I Have to
Wen Yuhuai was pinned in place by this sudden kiss. He seemingly hadn’t expected Song Xingmian to be so bold as to try a forced kiss. It wasn’t until his upper lip was bitten, not too lightly, that he snapped back to reality.
“You—”
He had barely uttered a word when the opportunity was seized to break through his lips and teeth, invading within. Song Xingmian’s kiss was aggressive beyond measure, and his intent to attack was incredibly intense. One palm cupped the back of Wen Yuhuai’s neck, leaving him nowhere to hide even if he wanted to.
Wen Yuhuai pushed him hard, but instead of pushing him away, he ended up sending himself further into the other’s embrace, looking as if he were throwing himself into the youth’s arms.
In this aggressive kiss, the scent of blood quickly filled the space between their lips and teeth. Song Xingmian finally spared a moment to part his blood-stained lips, yet his hand still tightly gripped Wen Yuhuai’s wrist, firmly restraining him.
“Why do you have to marry someone else? If you want to get married, I can do it too. We can go abroad to get a license, we can—”
Wen Yuhuai took advantage of the moment he was distracted by speaking to break free from his restraint. In an instant, he sidestepped and twisted the youth’s arms behind his back, pinning him against the wardrobe door. Their positions were reversed in a flash.
Vision was far too limited in the darkness. Wen Yuhuai relied almost entirely on instinct, reaching out to grab Song Xingmian’s collar and slamming his body hard against the wardrobe door behind him. A dull thud echoed through the room. His fist, showing no mercy, slammed into the youth’s abdomen.
Song Xingmian groaned in pain, his waist arching uncontrollably, and his head slumped forward.
Wen Yuhuai grabbed his collar again and hauled him up, his voice carrying a harsh edge. “Running wild in my room in the middle of the night?”
At this moment, Song Xingmian completely gave up any resistance. He went limp, letting himself fall into a passive state.
“I’m sorry, Gege. I was just… too emotional when I heard you were getting married…”
Wen Yuhuai gave a cold scoff. “Are you sober now?”
Song Xingmian looked like a lamb led to the slaughter, saying pitifully, “I’m sober.”
Only then did Wen Yuhuai finally release his grip. He reached back to find the light switch on the wall and pressed it. The room was flooded with light once more.
Song Xingmian stood leaning against the wardrobe door in a disheveled state. His red eyes still dared to stare directly at Wen Yuhuai, glistening with tears like some abandoned small animal.
“Gege.”
Wen Yuhuai had just been bitten hard by this seemingly harmless “obedient little brother,” so naturally, he wouldn’t fall for the act again. He merely gave him a cold look. “Go back to your own room and sleep. Tomorrow, get your ass back to Country M.”
Song Xingmian blinked unexpectedly, and crystal teardrops immediately fell. “I won’t! Gege, I won’t do it again. Don’t throw me away…”
Wen Yuhuai’s heart was like steel. “Don’t play those tricks with me. I don’t buy it.”
Song Xingmian cried even more pitifully. Large teardrops fell one after another onto his lapel and the floor. Those increasingly red eyes remained fixed on Wen Yuhuai.
He didn’t speak, just cried silently. It looked even more heart-wrenching than a loud cry, as if Wen Yuhuai had done something terrible to him.
Wen Yuhuai had always been a sucker for the “soft” approach rather than the “hard” one. Seeing him cry like this, his tone finally wasn’t as harsh as before. “Didn’t you have the guts to force a kiss just now? What are you crying for now? You got what you wanted and you’re still acting like the victim?”
Song Xingmian’s body slid down bit by bit until he was half-kneeling on the carpet. He crawled forward a few steps on his knees to reach for the hem of Wen Yuhuai’s shirt, refusing to let go once he caught it. He pressed his cheek against Wen Yuhuai’s abdomen, looking up at him from the posture of a weakling. “Gege doesn’t want me anymore, am I not even allowed to cry?”
Wen Yuhuai was angered to the point of laughter. He looked down, his hand cupping Song Xingmian’s jaw and tilting it upward in a posture of complete control.
“Why don’t you think about what you just did first? Did I wrong you?”
Song Xingmian went silent again. He looked up at him in that posture, his hand on the hem of the shirt climbing further back until he was tightly hugging Wen Yuhuai’s waist. He then said with total abandonment, “Anyway, I’m not leaving. You can hit me. Hit me to death, but I’m still not leaving. I’ll die by your side even if I have to.”
Wen Yuhuai’s temples throbbed. He took a deep breath and looked up at the ceiling, momentarily unsure of what to do with him.
If the boy had kept being aggressive, he could have kicked him out tonight. But he had turned soft halfway through and was crying so beautifully that Wen Yuhuai couldn’t bring himself to do anything. He felt like anything he did would be bullying the kid.
“Go back to sleep first. If you keep lingering here, believe it or not, I’ll throw you out today?”
Song Xingmian saw him wavering and didn’t push his luck further. He quit while he was ahead, standing up with his hands still on Wen Yuhuai’s waist. “Goodnight, Gege. See you tomorrow.”
After saying that, he turned and left the room without a hint of hesitation, showing none of the pitiful, tearful state he had been in just moments ago.
Wen Yuhuai knew he had been tricked by the boy’s disguise again, but he didn’t have the energy to argue with him. Once the door closed, he fell back onto the bed in exhaustion.
Song Xingmian… seeing how clingy he was, it felt as if he were determined to have him for life. Truly a hassle.
Wen Yuhuai pressed his fingers firmly against his brow, searching his mind for a foolproof way to make the boy give up for good. Before he could think of anything, his phone began to buzz.
He picked it up and looked. It was Lin Shiyu.
“Hello.”
Lin Shiyu’s voice sounded very relaxed. “How are you? Are you adjusting well over there?”
Wen Yuhuai took a deep breath. “It’s fine. There’s nothing to ‘adjust’ to. The temperature here is much higher than in Jing City or Hai City.”
In Jing City at this time of year, one would shiver even in a down jacket. Hai City wasn’t as cold, but an overcoat was the bare minimum. In Shen City, however, a thin jacket was enough.
“You don’t sound very enthusiastic. What is it? Tired from the flight?”
Wen Yuhuai rubbed his brow, not telling him about Song Xingmian.
He wasn’t so lightheaded that he would complain about one person who liked him to another person who likely also liked him.
“A little tired. I was about to sleep. Is there a reason you called?”
Lin Shiyu’s voice turned much gentler. “No reason. I just missed you.”
“…”
The directness of the hit caught Wen Yuhuai off guard. For a moment, he didn’t know what to say.
After a long while, he asked with a weary heart, “You still like me?”
Lin Shiyu answered without a moment’s hesitation. “Yes, I like you.”
Wen Yuhuai: “Can you stop liking me? Go like someone else. Can’t we just be friends?”
Lin Shiyu, holding his phone, replied with total composure, “No. That’s not good.”
Wen Yuhuai had nothing left to say. He looked at the call screen, ready to hang up. “If you only called to say these useless things, then don’t call again.”
Lin Shiyu gave a soft sigh, finally revealing the true intent behind his call. “What about Song Xingmian? How is he?”
The question was vague, but Wen Yuhuai understood his meaning instantly. However, he didn’t point it out and continued to play dumb. “You want to talk to him? He’s right next door. I’ll go call him—”
Lin Shiyu interrupted him. “You know that’s not what I meant.”
What did Song Xingmian’s state have to do with him? He was afraid that while he wasn’t by Wen Yuhuai’s side, Wen Yuhuai would be swayed by the boy’s tactics.
After all, they had been playing together for so many years and knew each other well. Song Xingmian might be young, but his methods for coaxing people were endless. One could easily fall into his trap if they weren’t careful.
“Forget it. It’s late. Get some sleep.”
He switched screens to check the flight tickets from Hai City to Shen City and booked the earliest flight for tomorrow morning.
Translator’s Note: “梨花带雨” (Líhuā dài yǔ) – This idiom literally means “pear blossoms with rain.” It’s a poetic way to describe a beautiful woman (or in this case, a handsome youth) crying pitifully. Song Xingmian really knows how to play his cards! Also, Wen Yuhuai is really feeling the weight of being “straight” in a world where everyone seems to want a piece of him.
