Chapter 38: I Won’t Betray Brother Chen Wei
Perhaps the police search was nearing its end. Not far away, an officer jogged over to find Chen Wei. As the manager, Han Chi took the initiative to step forward and communicate regarding everything related to the incident.
As the victim of the “extortion” who had inadvertently helped the police crack such a major case, the police naturally didn’t make things difficult for him. However, because the information they had gathered differed slightly from Chen Wei’s statement, they only asked Han Chi and the others to follow the police car to the station to make a statement.
Sitting in Zhou Sijin’s car on the way to the station, Chen Wei proactively explained the full story and his plan to Han Chi, fearing he wouldn’t know the truth and would cause police suspicion with inconsistent statements.
Chen Wei and Zhou Sijin sat in the back, separated by a distance. Han Chi sat in the front; the driver was Zhou Sijin’s assistant. There were only four people in the car, and two of them were staring with wide, incredulous eyes because of Chen Wei’s words.
Except, of course, Zhou Sijin.
Used to hiding his emotions, even though he was truly a bit impressed by Chen Wei’s thorough arrangements, he only gave him a deep, sidelong glance without showing it on his face.
However, Han Chi in the front seat seemed to have thought of something. Frowning, he raised a question everyone had overlooked. He turned to look at Chen Wei.
“You went to the bank to get fifty million? Where did you get that kind of money?”
If they had fifty million, they wouldn’t have been worrying about the contract, and they certainly wouldn’t have been involved in this mess.
Not wanting Zhou Sijin to know about the black-gold card and the fifty million, Chen Wei instinctively prepared to lie.
“You’re so silly!” The assistant driving suddenly cut him off. “He only said he was being extorted for fifty million; he never said he actually had fifty million to withdraw.”
A few million, ten million, or twenty million were all possible. In the assistant’s mind, Chen Wei was a star; it wasn’t strange for him to have that much.
Hearing the assistant’s explanation, Han Chi rubbed his nose awkwardly. He couldn’t be blamed for asking such a “low IQ” question; he was just sensitive to the figure of fifty million.
The assistant’s words successfully dispelled their suspicions. Chen Wei didn’t want to discuss the topic further, so he returned to silence and stared out the window.
.
When the police arrived at the scene, Zhou Sijin had already brought Chen Wei out of the hotel. Since the matter had nothing to do with him, he waited in the car. In the interval, Zhou Sijin didn’t stay idle.
Perhaps stimulated by Chen Wei’s heartless remarks into finally finding his conscience, Zhou Sijin picked up his phone and began contacting people for resources for Chen Wei.
It was an hour later when Chen Wei and his group emerged from the police station. Not wanting to ride in Zhou Sijin’s car again, Chen Wei walked straight toward his own parked van without a second glance.
Han Chi tugged at him from behind. “A-Wei?”
He didn’t know what had happened between Chen Wei and Zhou Sijin, but the atmosphere between them was strange. Since this hadn’t happened before, Han Chi didn’t think too deeply about it.
“Let’s get back to the car first.” Zhou Sijin was still there, so Chen Wei didn’t have time to explain much. He turned and walked away. Han Chi had no choice but to jog and keep up.
The sudden pause allowed Zhou Sijin, who was on the phone in his car, to see their interaction clearly. He watched as Chen Wei’s back grew more distant until he stepped into his van.
Hanging up the phone, Zhou Sijin’s deep black eyes half-closed with an unreadable expression. Chen Wei’s van soon started and pulled away from the police station before Zhou Sijin’s car could move.
The assistant driving hesitated, cautiously observing his boss’s face through the rearview mirror.
“Boss, should we…”
Zhou Sijin had rushed out from a banquet. It was late now, and there was no point in going back. Recalling his promise this morning to return tonight, he closed his eyes and leaned back against the seat, feeling exhausted.
“Go to Jiahe Court.”
Jiahe Court was Chen Wei’s residence. It wasn’t the first time the assistant had been there. Following the van, the two cars maintained a steady distance. During the drive, Han Chi in the passenger seat looked back more than once. Every time he did, he saw Zhou Sijin’s car through the rear window.
He still didn’t understand. How had the two of them, who were fine just a moment ago, suddenly become so bitter toward each other?
Chen Wei was resting with his eyes closed, unaware that Zhou Sijin was following. Beside him, Jiang Chuan looked like he wanted to ask something but didn’t dare. He looked at Han Chi, and Han Chi looked at him. The atmosphere in the van was eerily strange.
Jiang Chuan wanted to speak, but Han Chi signaled him with a look. Jiang Chuan bit his lip and sat back honestly. As he sat down, he looked at the coat on his lap, then turned a complex gaze toward the resting Chen Wei.
As the van slowed to a stop in the underground garage, Chen Wei sensed it and opened his eyes. He was tired, so he didn’t ask anyone to stay. After saying goodbye to Han Chi, he turned to leave.
Zhou Sijin’s car stopped right behind them. The door opened, and Zhou Sijin stepped out. Without looking at the others, he focused on Chen Wei’s retreating figure and quickly followed.
“…”
The others stood there, looking at each other. A few seconds later, Han Chi was the first to get back into the van. But just as he sat down, he saw Chen Wei’s coat on Jiang Chuan’s seat.
“What are you doing with A-Wei’s coat?” Han Chi reached out to take the clothes.
Jiang Chuan was quick-eyed and snatched the coat, hugging it to his chest as a flash of panic crossed his eyes. He looked at Han Chi and explained nervously:
“I… I’ll wash it before giving it back to Brother Chen Wei.”
The series of strange reactions made Han Chi’s eyes narrow sharply.
“Are you planning to backstab A-Wei?”
Zhang Chen was caught, but Xu Cheng hadn’t received his punishment yet. If Jiang Chuan dared to be ungrateful and take A-Wei’s clothes to claim credit with Xu Cheng, he would kill him in the car right now.
“I’m not!” Jiang Chuan countered quickly, his voice urgent. “Brother Chen Wei saved me; how could I be so heartless as to betray him?”
Han Chi sneered mockingly. “Have you done few heartless things?”
Han Chi was being pointed, and Jiang Chuan knew exactly what he was referring to. He truly had been sorry toward Han Chi regarding the previous incident. But the situation this time was different.
No one could understand what this piece of clothing meant to him. He would never forget the scene of Chen Wei appearing alone at the hotel today. He had not only saved his life but also preserved the little dignity he had left with this coat.
To Zhang Chen, he was just a dog. But today, Chen Wei had truly treated him as a human being.
Clutching the clothes tightly, Jiang Chuan lowered his head, his voice filled with a rare sincerity and seriousness:
“Don’t worry, Brother Han. In this lifetime, no matter who I betray, I will never betray Brother Chen Wei.”
